From Plague to Salute.

The History of Pandemics in Venice

A journey to discover a subject as topical and interesting as pandemics, which has run through the history of Venice over the centuries, shaping the Serenissima’s policies on prevention and the management of migratory flows.
Venice was the first city to equip itself with a structured public health system to confront the Black Death, as the plague was called, which caused many of the great epidemics that occurred throughout its history, claiming numerous victims. The documentary Dalla Peste alla Salute. Storia delle pandemie a Venezia (From Plague to Salute. The History of Pandemics in Venice) recounts the path followed by the Serenissima in the prevention and treatment of epidemic diseases, focusing in particular on the intuition behind effective measures still adopted by modern medicine today.
An original in-depth look at the theme of the plague as faced by the Serenissima and at the importance of the centuries-old experience of Venice and the University of Padua in approaching epidemics, with reference also to the sacred places that remain as evidence of this and to customs and traditions still strongly felt today.
Written and presented by Alberto Toso Fei, directed by the Venetian filmmaker Tommaso Giusto and conceived by Marco Vidal, managing director of The Merchant of Venice, the documentary features the participation of Professor Nelli Vanzan Marchini, the leading historical authority on the subject of Venetian public health, and of Professor Emeritus Giorgio Palù, a virologist of international standing.
